16.7 million people fell victim to identity fraud in 2017 alone. A hacking attack occurs every 39 seconds.

But millennials don’t seem all that phased!!
A recent study into the general Australian communities’ attitude to privacy generated some surprising results. Of all the age groups, those between 18-34 years old were significantly less concerned in regard to privacy.

So why is it that millennials aren’t so worried?
Is it because their concerns are focused towards other issues like the current declining state of earth?
Is it because as they grew up with technology from a young age so are more accustomed to the internet and the benefits and concerns that come with it?
Or is it simply a case of the older generations being too paranoid and having unnecessary concerns into their online privacy?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
Interesting read! I personally think it’s a case of the oldies being slightly too paranoid due to a lack of understanding. Whilst I personally do have concerns about my online privacy I also know ways to protect it therefore reducing my concerns. Would you agree?

Yes very true. Older generations probably aren’t as equipped with knowledge on how to protect their online privacy so it makes complete sense that they’d be more concerned!

That is a unique question you pose. I would attribute the results to the younger generations being more comfortable with the internet, the good and the bad and therefore not being as concerned.

Yes I think that is definitely a main reason for the results!

Wow! This is a different perspective, I think it might be the older generation just being over dramatic? I mean, we grew up with it and know what we’re getting ourselves into, they don’t. Generational gaps I guess!

I’m definitely not older than 34, however I’d say I’m pretty concerned about my privacy online! While I’m still present on social media and share contents from time to time, I prefer to not disclose too much personal information as I’m afraid those information might be used for identity fraud like you mentioned.

I agree – I also don’t share too much personal information for same reason as you mentioned!

Wow great post 🙂 It’s quite scary with seeing statistics of identity fraud! But I do agree that as a young person I’m not necessarily that worried, I guess it’s because I’ve grown up knowing the risks and knowing what I’ve gotten myself into.

Really interesting statistics about how often a hack occurs! I care about my personal info online and yet not enough to read something as simple as the Ts&Cs. I think it’s because I’ve just grown up with so much technology and nothing bad has happened yet (touch wood)

The data that you mentioned at the start are very concerning and I think it is quite worrying that the younger generation are not concerns with their privacy online!

I could understand why teens are so worried about their online privacy since their self-confidence is low. Many of them would scare to be judged as a bad boy/girl so they try to hide the thing that they perceive as negative. In contrast, the adult is more confident and have a clear vision of what is shameful or normal. However, it is surprising that old people from 55 and above are too concerned about that. Maybe they receive a spam email and just give their bank account information?

Whilst it is surprising that those aged 55 and above are so concerned I think it does make logical sense. I know that every time my mum sees a competition being advertised, even if done by a legit company, she is extremely skeptical whereas I would have no hesitation in entering at all. Different generations I guess!

Wow, This is a big data about hacker attacks. I think we know how to protect our privacy when we using internet, I never save our password in the new website.

Good thinking to not save your passwords in the website 🙂
